Artist Talk: Kern Samuel

Wed, May 8, 2024 • 4:30pm - 5:30pm (1h) • Boliou 104

This talk sponsored by the Christopher U. Light Lectureship in the Arts

Kern Samuel (b. 1990, Mount Hope, Trinidad and Tobago) currently lives and works in New Haven, CT. His practice centers on painting as a means to explore concepts of tradition, value, and subjectivity. He works with techniques such as sewing, dyeing, layering, and folding to create his geometric and text-based abstractions.

Additionally, he draws on the linguistic and cultural nuances that emerge in everyday life, which are reflected in his material and visual explorations. His practice is an open space to roam, to move freely through various tactile processes, and to engage in a form of implicit self-reflection.
