Revisiting the Grotto of Tiberius at Sperlonga
Connect to Virtual Event
The grotto at Sperlonga was part of a great ancient villa complex on the southwest coast of Lazio, usually associated with the emperor Tiberius (r. 14-37 C.E.). The grotto is perhaps best known for it's a massive marble sculptural assemblages, first discovered during roadworks in 1957. Painstaking reconstruction has revealed at least four major scenes depicting Odysseus’ adventures around the Mediterranean. As part of her dissertation research, Rebecca Levitan, University of California-Berkeley, PhD candidate, was able to visit the grotto in July 2021 and begin to study some of the 7,000+ sculptural fragments excavated on site. This presentation provides an overview of the research conducted at Sperlonga and some initial findings.
