Help restore the forests of the Carleton Arboretum by protecting young trees from winter deer browse! In the winter hungry deer search out the buds of trees and shrubs.  We protect our new trees by hiding their top bud inside a small paper bag which is stapled closed.  Deer are visual feeders, so don’t detect the bud inside the bag.  Once the tip of the tree is above the height of a deer mouth we no longer have to protect the tree.  Since we plant new trees each year there are always trees to protect in this way.
