Describe where your project will be located, specifying the Arboretum or McKnight Prairie. Use the Arboretum map coordinates plus additional discriptors as needed. Example: J13, south end of Kettle Hole Marsh.*
If you propose to collect and remove plants, plant parts, soil, fungi, etc provide details of what type and how many. Examples: 100 goldenrod galls; leaf litter from five 1/4 meter X 1/4 meter plots; 20 soil cores 10cm x 2cm.
If you propose to leave unattended markers of your research location please note that all marked areas require clear labeling with project ID. Project ID label will be assigned when approval for the project is granted. In areas with multiple markers within sight of each other, only markers at the beginning and end of transects or in the corners of plots need labels. Unlabeled markers and tags will be removed by Arboretum staff. Describe the type and approximate quantity of the flagging, tags, or other markers you will use. [Flagging that will decompose, rather than plastic flagging should be used for most projects.]
If you propose to capture invertebrate animals, describe the method of collection and the approximate number to be taken.
If you propose to capture/handle/house vertebrate animals you must also apply separately to the College's Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) for permission. The forms can be found at the Dean of the College web page (apps.carleton.edu/governance/iacuc/). Please provide your protocal number from your IACUC permit.

For substantial research projects (as determined at the discretion of the Arboretum Director and the Arboretum Research Supervisor), you may be required to submit a final research summary upon completion of your project. By completing and submitting this application, you agree not to begin the project until approval is received. You agree to the terms and conditions that may be specified as part of this approval. You agree to remove all flagging and equipment used at the completion of the project.
