New Research Plots
12 January 2012Along with the regular prairie planting that happened in the Arb this fall, a new research project, overlaid on one of the plantings was also initiated. This project is designed to investigate the impact of inoculating our restoration plantings with soil from original, never plowed, prairie remnants.

Poisonous Plant Alert!
16 May 2011Wild Parsnip, Pastinaca sativa, is an invasive, non-native plant growing abundantly in portions of the Arboretum and in some of the un-mowed areas on campus such as around Lyman Lakes. While Arboretum and Grounds staff are working to control this plant, it is important that Arb users be aware of possible health risks.

Winter in the Arboretum
14 January 2011If you have not had a chance to appreciate the quiet solitude of the prairies, forests, and oak savanna in Carleton’s Cowling Arboretum, we encourage you to get out, especially on cross country skis or snowshoes. Both are available to check out from the Recreation Center. Snowshoes are a great way to get off the trails and explore some of the more remote parts of the Arboretum. If walking is your preferred method of winter travel in the Arboretum, we have some tips for you as well.

Bridge Rehabilitation in the Upper Arboretum
