( Podophyllum peltatum ) aka Wild Mandrake, Ground Lemon Bloom Time: Summer (May – June) Location: prefers nutrient rich woods, typically broadleaf forests or floodplains. Only found in the far southeast of Minnesota (general). Mayapples can be found in abundance in the Upper Arb along the banks of Spring Creek. Also found in Stork Forest (Arb). Family: Barberry (Berberidaceae) Physical Description: Single white flower, nodding, right at the fork of the stalk. Typically hidden by the umbrella-like leaves. It has 6-9 white petals and yellow stamens. Leaves are palmately lobed (5-9 parts), and have a noticeable notch at the tip. Flower matures into a single yellow fruit that contains several seeds. Grows to a height of 1-2 feet. Spreads by rhizomes. NOTE: Immature fruit, leaves and roots are considered poisonous. Will cause inflammation of the digestive system and depress the central nervous system. Ripe fruits considered edible by some, inedible by others.
