Living up to be over 400 years old, these trees can be found in savannah habitat and open forests. Bur Oaks can be distinguished from other oaks by their rounded, alternate leaves ranging from 4-8 inches, and large rounded acorns with fringed or ‘mossy’ caps that grow up to an inch in diameter. The characteristic coarse, furrowed bark of Bur Oak trees protects them from fire, which was historically a major part of prairie and savannah ecosystems.
