Also known as ‘Linden’ trees, the American Basswood can be identified by its alternate, heart-shaped, 3-10 inch leaves, and pleasant smell when flowering in the early summer. Found in mature forests alongside Red Oak and Sugar Maple, Basswoods have smooth gray bark when young that becomes furrowed and round nut-like fruit ¼ inch in diameter that hang beneath papery ‘wings’. This specie of tree is one of the few insect-pollinated trees in Minnesota.
