Silky Aster, Symphyotrichum sericeum

(Symphyotrichum sericeum Location: prefers full sun and dry, open areas. Often found in upland prairies, regions characterized by gravel or sand, oak or sandy savannas, and tall-grass prairie remnants. Its presence is an indication of a high quality ecosystem. Found throughout the south and west of Minnesota (general). Found in the restored prairies east of the Rec Center. Family: Aster (Asteraceae) Physical Description: flowers are about an inch across with 15-25 radiating purple petals. The center is comprised of small, yellow disk flowers (brown with age). Leaves are alternate, grey-green, and covered in fine hairs that feel like silk. Stems are a reddish brown. Quick Facts: Does not tolerate competition from taller plants well, but like many other asters, is very resistant to drought. This plant also acts as a source of food for many quadrupeds, including: rabbits, deer, cattle, horses, and groundhogs. This plant’s presence is considered to be indicative of a high quality site.
