American Basswood Flowers

The American basswood is a long-lived tree that grows throughout Minnesota’s southeastern woodlands. It is often used as an ornamental because of its symmetrical growth pattern. Basswood flowers grow in hanging clusters and are pale-yellow with yellow-tipped stamens. From June to August, the flowers are a favorite among bees, lending itself to the nickname “Bee-tree.” In the arb, look for basswood throughout the upland forest, although a few are present in the floodplain along Spring Creek and the Cannon.
