Quaking Aspen Flowers

Quaking aspen are impressive trees: not only do they have the widest natural range of any tree in North America, spanning from Mexico to Canada, but they are also considered the heaviest living organism. Quaking aspen are dioecious, meaning that male and female flowers grow on separate trees. All quaking aspen flowers grow in red and white hanging clusters and contain wispy, cotton-like hairs. Flowers appear from April-May and are pollinated by wind. In the Arboretum, look for aspen in young forests, especially north of Kettle Hole Marsh.
