Prairie Crabapple Flowers (Malus ioensis)
#8 of 18
Prairie crabapples are small trees that put on a spectacular display every spring with showy blooms. Flowers are very fragrant and have five pink petals and yellow-tipped stamens. Flowers bloom from May-June and are mostly pollinated by honeybees, bumblebees, and other long-tongued bees, but are also frequently visited by butterflies and skippers. Crabapples are found in edgy areas, especially along the edges of the oak savanna. One is found just west of the Arboretum office.
