Northern Hackberry Flowers

The Northern Hackberry (also called the nettletree, sugarberry, or beaverwood) is a medium-sized hardwood that is well-known for its warty, ridged bark. While male and female flowers grow separately on the same tree, all hackberry flowers are green to yellow and grow in hanging clusters at the base of each leaf. Hackberries bloom in May and are pollinated by the wind. Look for these trees in the upland forests of the Arboretum.
