Fairly common, difficult to catch. Among the more “wary” dragonflies, and they tend to perch on lily pads or other aquatic vegetation out over the water.

Average 2.2 in. long

On the wing from June to the end of July

Abdomen has triangular yellow-green spots on black. The yellow-green thoracic stripe connects with the thinner shoulder stripe in both males and females. Females have two small yellow “horns” positioned right behind the eyes. Eyes are grey-green, legs are black, and wings are clear in both sexes. Eyes do not meet at the top of the head, and are separated by a green bridge. Face is the same yellow-green as abdomen spots and thorax. Ironically, these species lacks the distinctive clubtail that gives this genus its name.

Prefer slow-moving streams, the edges of marshland, and muddy ponds.

Females oviposit directly into the water by gently tapping their tails as they fly above the surface. Nymphs live in submerged weeds.
