Indian Grass

Indian Grass (Sorghastrum nutans) is another member of the Grass family (Poaceae) that can be distinguished by its clustered, golden brown seed heads. Indian Grass grows to be over 6 feet tall and is the other dominant grass species in the Arboretum prairies.  This plant is a warm season grass that grows rapidly during July and usually begins flowering in early August.  Big Blue Stem and Indian Grass are the dominant plant species in tallgrass prairies.
