Virginia Mountain Mint (Pycanthemum virginianum) is a member of the Mint family (Lamiaceae) that can be identified by its square stems, narrow leaves, and numerous small, white flowers. Growing to be 2 or 3 feet tall, this species spreads by underground rhizomes forming dense colonies. Virginia Mountain Mint’s nectar attracts many insects including bees, wasps, flies, beetles, and some butterflies but, like other members of the Mint family, most herbivorous mammals avoid this species. Virginia Mountain Mint blooms from July through the end of August and is common in the Arboretum prairies.
