Looking for something to plant?
Finding native plants in nurseries can be difficult. Most nurseries sell a combination of native, non-native, and invasive plants. Additionally, it is not uncommon for nurseries to sell plants under the name of a native plant, but for the plant to actually be invasive. Here’s what you can do to support native habitats:
1. Do your homework
Find out if the plant you want is actually native. Find out if there are invasive plants that look similar or are often sold under the same name, and make sure you know enough to positively identify the plant you want.
2. Find trusted sources
Use the internet to find out what nurseries have a good track record for selling native species.
3. Ask your local nurseries for native plants
The more pressure put on nurseries to supply native plants, the more native plants will be propagated and the fewer invasives will be introduced into the ecosystem. Nurseries won’t start carrying natives unless they know there’s a market: let them know there is one, and have your friends do the same.
