This placement test is intended for students who have studied Modern Standard Arabic outside the Carleton Arabic language course sequence and would like either to be evaluated for exemption from some or all of the five Arabic language classes offered at Carleton, or to place into a course beyond the first level.

Please download and print the test, complete it by hand, then scan it (using a scanning app, or clear photos combined into a single PDF) and email it by July 1 to:

Please do not use any dictionaries, verb tables, or online resources. The test becomes progressively more difficult; there is no time limit, but you should stop answering any exercises that feel excessively time-consuming or difficult.

You will be sent a preliminary indication of your placement prior to registration. Final placement will be confirmed after a short conversation with you in Arabic on campus (check the New Student Week schedule once you are on campus to verify location and confirm time).
