Frequently Asked Questions
Why are we doing a second phase of antiracism training?
The CEDI Leadership Board has prepared the next steps in Carleton’s ongoing commitment to building an antiracist institution. One part of this commitment, made by the President and Tuesday Group, involves continuing antiracism training to build the capacity of our community to talk about and take action on IDE issues in the workplace. An Action Team was commissioned in the Spring/Summer of 2020 to create a plan for the first stages of this training.
This spring represents a moment of transition that involves following through on some components of the this original plan that weren’t completed last year and exploring new approaches to inform the design and implementation of an ongoing anti-bias education program for all members of the community that is outlined in Section 1.2.3 of the draft IDE strategic plan.
The mix of approaches for this spring’s training will allow Carleton faculty and staff to consider possible forms that programming might take in the future. CEDI will seek feedback after Spring Term about the pros and cons of various aspects of the three different parts of the training to share with a new Chief Diversity Officer and other relevant offices, committees, and individuals who will determine next steps that are consistent with the IDE strategic plan.
I am new to Carleton (within the last year) and was not here for Phase I of this training. Where can I learn more about it?
Visit the Phase I pages of this site to see much of what we did last year. Those who are new to Carleton or who were not able to complete the training series in 2022 will be contacted about viewing a recorded session from our Phase II trainer, Strategic Diversity Initiatives, in order to be brought up to speed.
Am I required to participate in all (3) parts of Phase II?
Yes. As this training is required for all faculty and staff, it is expected that everyone will participate in all three parts of this phase. More information will be coming as to how you can verify that you have completed all components of this phase.
What are the (3) parts of Phase II that I must complete?
- In-person (largely), externally-facilitated 90-minute sessions focused on developing skills that are relevant to the areas of bystander intervention, individual responsibility to act, and creating a welcoming environment. These three topics were identified as priorities by the original Working Group, but were not part of last year’s training. These sessions will be facilitated by Strategic Diversity Initiatives (SDI), a firm that has led training for offices at Carleton in the past. Based on feedback from last year’s training, we have asked SDI to design the sessions to be interactive and relevant to the Carleton context.
- Internally-facilitated sessions held by departments/work groups/units during a time of their choosing to discuss what bystander intervention, responsibility to act, and creating a welcoming environment look like in each department or office. A group of Carleton faculty and staff, who receive facilitator training from Strategic Diversity Initiatives, will be available to assist those departments/work groups/units that would like a facilitator from outside their office. Providing faculty and staff with facilitation training is part of the effort to build institutional capacity for dialog around IDE topics. Depending on size and interests, departments and offices can request to engage in cross-working group sessions and CEDI will help make connections for those looking to collaborate on this conversation.
- Each employee chooses to attend one event or discussion happening on campus in Spring Term that has been identified as relevant to the antiracism topics identified by the original Working Group. This acknowledges that there are many events held on campus (such as the dialogues led by Staff Collective for Change, selected LTC events and Convocations, and others) that contribute to understanding of issues and building skills that are important in the context of developing an antiracist community.
What is the deadline to complete all of Phase II?
Phase II must be completed by the end of Spring Term.
How do I sign up for the first training session with SDI?
You will receive an email from Human Resources as Spring Term begins, which will have instructions on how to sign up for a session with SDI. Sessions will be on campus and in person. Please select and register for a session by April 15.
Can I see who else is registered for a session?
No, the sign up system does not allow access to the names of others who have registered. However, the session facilitators will be providing opportunity for people to move around in the sessions to address the comfort levels they may feel to be in discussion with other attendees.
I received an error message after I accepted the calendar invite for the training session. Do I need to re-register?
No, you are still registered.
***Once you have signed up, you will get a calendar invite for the training session. When you accept that calendar invite, you may get an error message that looks like this in your email: You do not have to worry about this, you are still signed up. This is happening because that email address does not accept emails, so when you accept the calendar invite, Google is trying to send that email a message. You can disregard this message

Will there be a Phase III next year?
The mix of approaches for this spring’s training will allow Carleton faculty and staff to consider possible forms that programming might take in the future. CEDI will seek feedback after Spring Term about the pros and cons of various aspects of the three different parts of the training to share with a new Chief Diversity Officer and other relevant offices, committees, and individuals who will determine next steps that are consistent with the IDE strategic plan.
What if I did not complete Phase I?
Strategic Diversity Initiatives has recorded a session designed to bring you up to speed on topics covered in Phase I of the training. That video will soon be posted here. Human Resources will also reach out directly to employees who are being asked to watch this background video to provide the link. Please watch the video prior to the small group session you register to attend.
What if I cannot complete Phase II?
Please contact Human Resources if you are unable to complete one or all of the components of Phase II. They will work with you on an individual basis for next steps.
**If you are on an approved leave of absence or sabbatical during the time these trainings are offered, you do not have to worry about completing anything you missed. If you return before the end of the term, and there are events on campus happening that you could attend in order to participate in some of Phase II, it is assumed you will do that. Please contact HR if you have questions.
It seems like we are only focused on race right now; why aren’t these trainings focused on other areas of diversity and inclusion?
In Winter and Spring 2021, Carleton took the first steps in what was envisioned as an ongoing, multi-year, antiracism training effort. This effort was spurred by student and alumni demands for a strong institutional commitment to racial equity, and the Community, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Leadership Board (CEDI) was charged with developing a plan for the training. Mandatory for all faculty and staff, this training was intended to establish a common understanding of antiracism and help us begin to develop a common vocabulary for future work together. The training was also intended to help examine and address the Carleton contexts in which racism is experienced.
There are many additional aspects of diversity and inclusion with which our community must also engage. It is CEDI’s hope that the skills and experiences gained through the current training can help inform our approaches to future IDE work.
Will there be an opportunity to give feedback on one, or all of the different components of this phase?
Yes. There will be opportunity for anonymous, direct feedback for each component of Phase II. You will be sent information for each of these opportunities as each component is completed.
Where can I direct my questions about Phase II of antiracism training?
