A COVID Summer
with Erik Andrews ’82

Summer 2020 approached. Our communities, our country, indeed, our world—all were morphing before our very eyes—fully consumed by this mysterious viral invasion we’ve since come to terms with, and now continue to live with, two years hence. I went for a bike ride.
For the past 24 summers, Erik Andrews ’82 has led groups of 40-60 high school students to volunteer with the Appalachia Service Project (ASP), helping make homes warmer, safer and drier for Appalachian families. In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic canceled ASP’s volunteer trips, which the organization relies on as a source of income. Instead, Erik decided to bike across the country to raise money for ASP. In total, he rode 3,351 miles across 10 states and raised $60,000 for ASP. Join us as Erik describes his travels and his mission.
