Carleton Virtual Breakfast Club
with Nancy Withbroe ’90 P’17
on her work with the National Women’s Law Center

Thursday, March 11, 2021
8:00 a.m. Central Time
via Zoom

Nancy Withbroe ’90 P’17 leads a conversation about her work as Chief Operating Officer & Chief of Staff of the National Women’s Law Center (NWLC), a 49-year-old Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that fights for gender justice—in the courts, in public policy, and in our society—working across the issues that are central to the lives of women and girls. NWLC uses the law in all its forms to change culture and drive solutions to the gender inequity that shapes our society and to break down the barriers that harm all of us—especially women of color, LGBTQ people, and low-income women and families. The organization has doubled in size over the last few years, launched the TIME’S UP Legal Defense Fund, and transitioned from its co-founders to its next stage under the leadership of Fatima Goss Graves – all during the Trump administration, now pivoting again to adjust its strategies to reflect working in the context of the Biden-Harris administration and the new Congress.

Nancy shares highlights of the internal work she is leading to transform culture, systems, and governance to support the organization’s evolution, centering racial equity in that work, and lead a conversation about lessons learned. Prior to stepping into this role in 2017, Nancy served as NWLC’s Vice President for Development and Strategy, building on a 30-year career in the nonprofit sector as a professional fundraiser, strategist, and team leader. Nancy has a master’s degree in educational leadership from American University in addition to her B.A. from Carleton, and serves as the board vice chair of ProInspire, a nonprofit that designs and develops programs and resources to help social sector leaders build the competencies, confidence, and connections to accelerate equity and leadership. She lives in Takoma Park, Maryland, with her husband Paul Smolinsky ’90 P’17, and is the mom of Ben Withbroe ’17 and Peter Withbroe.
