Legislating Respect and Dignity

Thursday, May 13, 2021

Thirty years ago, Congress attempted to legislate respect and dignity for human remains of any ancestry by passing the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act, or NAGPRA. Melanie (Wood) O’Brien ’99 administers those legislative provisions as the National NAGPRA Program Manager for the US Department of the Interior. Learn how public policy and bureaucratic red tape can serve as a bandage, if only a small one, for the historic trauma, long-standing injustices, and cultural violence of the past and the present. Find out more about repatriation work at a national level as well as in the homelands of the Wahpekute and Mdewakanton Dakota (also known as Minnesota).
