Poetry, Autism, and Our Neurodiverse Future

When poet Chris Martin co-founded Unrestricted Interest, an organization dedicated to helping neurodivergent learners transform their lives through writing, he didn’t anticipate how much of his work would be with nonspeaking autistic poets. Seven exciting years later, they form the core of his student base, and he works with brilliant neurodivergent poets from across the United States and Canada. This spring Martin became an Editor-at-Large for Milkweed Editions, where he will curate Multiverse, a series devoted to neurodivergent writing, and next year HarperOne will publish his first book of nonfiction, May Tomorrow Be Awake: On Poetry, Autism, and Our Neurodiverse Future. In this talk he will share stories, poems, and visions for what that neurodiverse future might look like.
