Home to the Potawatomi, Odawa, Ojibwe, Peoria, Kaskaskia, Myaamia, Wea, Sauk, Meskwaki, and Ho-Chunk peoples, the place we now call Chicago has long been a historic crossroads for many Indigenous people and remains home to an extensive urban Native community. Yet most Chicagoans are unaware of the city’s history as a home to diverse Indigenous peoples and the vibrant Indigenous communities present today.

Indigenous Chicago is a community-engaged project that has emerged from over four years of collaborations between the Newberry Library, community members in the Chicago Native community, the Chicago American Indian Community Collaborative, and Carleton College. Project components include an exhibition, new oral histories, a set of innovative digital maps, curricular modules for high school social studies, and public programming that will take place in Chicago during the fall of 2024.

Led by Professor Meredith McCoy, this alumni event will explore both the curriculum and the exhibition, which are tied together through a set of core themes: Chicago is a Native Place, Land and Environment, Convergence, Activism and Resistance, and Education.

Meredith McCoy (Turtle Mountain Ojibwe descent) is an Assistant Professor in History and American Studies at Carleton. Her courses explore Indigenous activism, education history, and Indigenous research methods. McCoy's research examines how Indigenous families, educators, and community leaders have long repurposed tools of settler violence towards Indigenous life. Her first book, On Our Own Terms: Indigenous Histories of School Funding and Policy, was recently published with the University of Nebraska Press and has been spotlighted by Ms. Magazine.
