The Friends of History/New Mexico History Museum invite you to a talk about the incarceration of people of Japanese descent during World War II. The talk, based on two artists' books Deeply Honored and Returning Home, covers the student relocation project, an initiative that allowed some students of college age to leave camp for their education, as well as the loyalty of Nisei who left camp to volunteer for military service.
This talk is being presented in conjunction with the Smithsonian traveling exhibit, Righting a Wrong: Japanese Americans and World War II, which is currently on display at the New Mexico History Museum through December 31, 2022.
Fred Hagstrom is the Rae Schupack Nathan Professor of Art. Fred teaches printmaking, drawing, art and narrative, and artist’s books. After earning his B.A. from Hamline University, he studied with S.W. Hayter at Atelier 17, Paris. He earned his M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska, Lincoln. His books and prints are held in numerous public collections, including the Library of Congress. He has spoken on the topic of World War II incarceration at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles, the Wing Luke Museum in Seattle, and the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art, near Seattle.
