Who We Are: An Indigenous 2SLGBTQIA+ Perspective to Culture, Education, and Politics

Broderick breaks down the history and importance of cultural monikers that fall under the 2SLGBTQIA+ umbrella. He discusses the impacts of colonization, trauma in education, cultural divides, and the way it all comes together in modern America. By looking at the entire picture, this presentation advocates for a stronger understanding of self, others, and our various identities beyond the handful of letters and numbers assigned to all of us.

Broderick Dressen '09 was born and raised on a farm near Red Wing, Minnesota and currently lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is an enrolled member of the Iñupiat Eskimo people of Utqiagvik, Alaska. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science: International Relations from Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota. He has spent the last 15 years working across various agencies in pursuit of bettering the lives and opportunities of Indigenous peoples in America. This has included working in Washington, DC for the Native American Contractors Association, the National Council of Urban Indian Health, and The George Washington University’s Center for Indigenous Politics and Policy. Prior to working on the Hill, he spent five years working for MIGIZI, a nonprofit in Minneapolis that works to close achievement gaps for Native youth through a variety of educational engagement opportunities. He currently works alongside his father providing professional development opportunities around Trauma and Culturally Informed Instruction. He also sits on the Board of Directors for the Minnesota Indian Education Association and the Out After Carleton Board.

This is part of the IDE Community Education workshops.
Please register by Thursday, April 9.
