Jack El-Hai ’79 is the award-winning author of The Nazi and the Psychiatrist (the basis of the forthcoming movie Nuremberg), Face in the Mirror (published this month), and many other works of nonfiction. Join the conversation to hear how his books come to life, what makes a great nonfiction story, and why he doesn’t believe in writer’s block.

Jack El-Hai ’79 has published hundreds of articles and more than a dozen books, including The Lobotomist: A Maverick Medical Genius and His Tragic Quest to Rid the World of Mental Illness and The Lost Brothers: A Family’s Decades-Long Search. In addition to leading workshops for physician-writers at more than a dozen institutions, he has contributed articles to The Atlantic, Scientific American, Wired, Discover, GQ, and many other publications. His writing awards include two Minnesota Book Awards, a McKnight Fellowship, the June Roth Memorial Award for Medical Journalism, and Outstanding Article honors from the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
As a teacher, El-Hai has coached many writers and led workshops and courses in the MFA creative writing program at Augsburg University, the journalism and creative writing programs of the University of Minnesota, and The Loft Literary Center, where he formerly served as the Board Chair. After graduating from Carleton as an English major, he earned an MFA in creative writing and literature from Bennington College.
