What to Bring
Please bring your own lawn chair/blanket and perhaps a jacket as you'll be sitting outside for a rather long period.
Each registrant will be provided with an approved solar viewer. Other optical aids (telescopes, binoculars, etc) are NOT safe unless they have an astronomer-approved filter.

Join fellow Carls in the Albuquerque area and hosts Diane Harrison Ogawa '84 and Greg Ogawa '85 for an annular solar eclipse watch/social gathering with Professor Joel Weisberg. The annular solar eclipse neatly bisects New Mexico and you will see the dramatic sight of the Sun as a thin ring, almost but not completely eclipsed by the Moon. Daylight will be dimmed considerably, but not dark like a total solar eclipse. This eerie sight can be enjoyed with eclipse glasses and other safe viewing methods. This is a rare and spectacular event that can only be experienced along a relatively narrow strip on the Earth's surface.
9:13 a.m: partial eclipse begins
10:34 - 10:38 a.m.: annularity
12:13 pm: all phases of eclipse end (note that the party ends by 11:30, and frankly the eclipse becomes rather boring starting with the end of annularity at 10:38 a.m. Of course Carls are never boring!).
Joel Weisberg is the Herman and Gertrude Mosier Stark Professor of Physics and Astronomy and the Natural Sciences, Emeritus, at Carleton College. He taught astronomy and physics courses, and also taught several multidisciplinary courses in the areas of environmental and technology studies and in science policy. Joel’s research is in the area of radio astronomy, particularly in the study of pulsars, which are rapidly spinning neutron stars the size of Northfield containing more mass than the Sun. He has co-authored 68 scientific articles with colleagues across the world and with Carleton students, and continues to work with some of them. Joel loves to share sunsets, the night sky, solar eclipses, and modern astronomy with others, and he has done so on numerous alumni journeys, including tours in the southwestern U.S., Oregon, Hawaii, Chile, Turkey, Australia, and Mexico.
