William had a long family connection to Carleton, as I discovered this past May while traveling to Turkey/Turkiye on a Carleton Alumni Adventure.

His grandfather, the Rev. Henry Knowles Wingate (1865-1944) (Carleton 1887) was a UCC missionary educator who transformed the Talas (Turkey) American College/Talas Boys School into a noted boys boarding school as of 1889. He led it until the 1917 entrance of the U.S. in WWI. His young daughter (William's aunt), Anna Lois (1894-1898) is poignantly buried in the school's garden overlooking the city of Talas.

William's father, Henry Smith Wingate, Carleton '27, Honorary '73, and his mother Ardis (Swenson) '28 also preceded on campus.
