The Reverend Susan M. Scofield, of W. Frederick St., Corry, Pa., died peacefully surrounded by family on December 27 at home after a year long battle with lung cancer. Mother Sue was born Susan Jeanne McMillion on March 7, 1945 in St. Charles, IL to Harry and Margaret (Nelson) McMillion of Geneva, IL. She is the eldest of four children. She is a 1963 graduate of Geneva High School. While attending Carleton College in Northfield, MN, she met the love of her life, The Rev. Lawrence F. Scofield. A few weeks after they graduated together from Carleton, they were united in marriage on July 1, 1967 and two years ago, celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary with their children. After their marriage, the couple served in the Peace Corps, then resided in Westchester County, NY for several years while Mother Sue worked first for the Westchester Association for Retarded Children, next for the New York School for the Deaf, then began a 25 year career doing medical transcription. Soon after starting their family, the couple moved to Brookfield, CT, where Mother Sue renewed her interest in Christianity through an ‘Education For Ministry’ program. She later became an EFM mentor and led such groups. In Brookfield she continued medical transcription for a time, then worked for Boehringer Ingelheim as a secretary. After 10 years the young family relocated briefly to St. Joseph, MO, then to Camdenton, MO, where Mother Sue did medical transcription for the local hospital, mentored EFM, and became an active Citizens Against Domestic Violence volunteer. During this time she found a love for working with teenagers, teaching them in Sunday School and helping with ‘Happening’ and ‘New Beginnings’ youth retreats. She is fondly remembered by many whose lives she touched in their youth. In 1996 the couple moved to Corry, PA, where Mother Sue worked for Corry Memorial Hospital for many years in the transcription department, then continued working from home for a transcription contractor. She continued teaching teens in Sunday School, at Church Camp, and for several years bringing groups of teens to ‘Creation Fest’ in Shirleysburg, PA. She continued working against domestic violence, becoming a volunteer and chaplain at the Safe Horizons (now Safe Journey) shelter in Union City, PA. She also served for many years as a volunteer, board member, and secretary of the Corry Area Food Pantry. It was also in Corry that she began to prepare for ordination as a priest in the Episcopal Church, initially so she could bring sacramental ministry into women’s shelters. After many years studying in the church’s Diocesan School for Ministry, she was ordained as a priest in 2007 by Bishop Sean Rowe at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Corry. After ordination, Mother Sue discovered she loved pastoral ministry as well. She served as priest associate at Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Corry and later as priest in charge of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Youngsville. PA. More recently, until her health forced her resignation, she was interim pastor of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Warren, PA, and Bethany Lutheran Church in Sheffield, PA.
In their spare time Mother Sue enjoyed camping, traveling and bird watching. Her travels included visits to Canada, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, and three times to Australia. The couple took their camper to many parts of North America ranging from the Bay of Fundy to Key West, and from the Grand Canyon to the Black Hills. After her recovery from a battle with bladder cancer in 2010, the couple spent the eight good years traveling to many National Parks, visiting children and grandchildren, and often camping with them. They succeeded in checking off all the major items on their “bucket list.”
Mother Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Harry (2002) & Marge (2012) McMillion, of Geneva, Illinois. She is survived by her husband, Larry, of the home; her two sons, Ken (Janelle) of Lee’s Summit, MO and Tedd (Gina), of Overland Park, KS; four grandchildren: Morgan Scofield (Parker Arthur) of Benton, MO, Billy Scofield (Stephani) of Camdenton, MO, Cara Scofield of Overland Park, KS, and Gracie Scofield of Blue Springs, MO; one great-grandchild: Colson Arthur of Benton, MO. She is also survived by her brother Steve McMillion (Becky) of Columbia, SC, and sisters Raima Erkert (Rick) of Durango, CO; and Paula McMillion of Palos Hills, IL.
