Steve was a dedicated, focused guy who would have had a successful career as an academic medicine specialist. He was a good friend to me, Lou Wu, and many other premeds.

Steve and I were friends and classmates at New Trier West High School in Northfield, Illinois. We roomed together while at Carleton and found ourselves on First Goodhue freshman year. Steve helped develop Jewish studies at the college with the help of Sy Shuster, math professor, and graduated Magna Cum Laude as a chemistry major. Steve and I spent another four years rooming together in Medical School at the University of Chicago attending with Bob Dubroff, Steve Barenkamp, Linda Minium, and Patty Simmons. I can still see our freshman class scratching their head wondering how Carleton got six premeds into that class. Steve was brilliant, funny, serious about medicine, and intense when it came to patient care. He went on to gain more honors in Medical School. He completed a residency in neurology at UCSF and went on to a fellowship in neuro-oncology at Sloan Kettering in New York City, and suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. He was gone in 48 hours. Steve’s wife Susan, learned of her pregnancy four days after he had donated his kidneys and was removed from the ventilator. Steve’s daughter, Sarah, graduated from Carleton and has a wonderful husband plus two beautiful children.

I have missed Steve for nearly 40 years and would have loved to witness his accomplishments. We never were able to share our stories of family and work to my great regret. Life is much too short, and it was especially so for Steve. I thought of him donating his kidneys in his last act of generosity as I received my transplanted lungs this past year. He lived his life with delight and enthusiasm, a twinkle in his eye and a grin that still makes me smile.

I met Steve in the swimming pool right after graduation, when we both lived in a group house for the summer. We had a "summer love", but did unfortunately did not stay in touch afterwards. He was indeed very smart, funny, intense, and serious, as well as just a nice guy whom I really enjoyed being with. I was not surprised to hear about his accomplishments as an MD, and was very sad when I heard about his untimely death.
