Stephen Shuller ’69

14 June 1990

Class: 1969

Major: Mathematics

Deceased: May 29, 1990

Stephen Michael Shuller was my best friend from the time we were in the eighth grade. We sat next to each other in science class being disruptive. From then on, we were comrades. How we both ended up at Carleton is a story which I have never fully understood. We were friends, bridge opponents(we made the mistake of teaching Koscielak bridge: then we were sunk). Having never played football, we tried out for the Carleton team. Steve played for two years. Thanks be to D3 sports, he never got seriously injured. After Carleton, Steve earned an MAT from Harvard and began a ten year commitment to high school students in the inner city. He became an accomplished guitarist and folk song writer. Sadly, in 1979, he contracted colon cancer and died.
