Stephen Rector ’67

15 August 1991

Class: 1967

Major: English

Deceased: July 20, 1991

Steve organized our study group for comps. Prior to that, I knew him because we shared an outsider point of view towards much that happened on campus, and I greatly admired his wit as well as his disregard of the rules and mores of official Carleton. I did not have the courage to flout authority the way Steve did, so I hung on the fringes of the group that surrounded him

Steve being the organizer, this study group met at the Muni. Given Muni rules, we needed to hide our books and notes. We managed to carry on deep discussions of the chronology of English lit while appearing to be typical afternoon drinkers. It was an enlightening experience. And we all passed comps.
