Stephen Goodman ’66

28 August 1988

Class: 1966

Major: Economics

Deceased: January 19, 1985

Steve was my roommate freshman year; his ambition then was to become a dentist. He used to give me a good-natured razzing when I answered campus first-aid calls for the Emergency Unit. As his life actually developed, he became a cardiologist. One night when he was on call, he was killed in a traffic crash racing to try to save a patient. I’m humbled by his sacrifice; he was a good man.

Lived on Ground Davis with Steve, aka “Thwarg” freshman.  Besides being a great guy, he was a very good softball player– played shortstop for our IM championship team. I was really saddened years ago when I learned of his tragic death.

Eric Carlson ’66

I, like Eric, became friendly with The Thwarg during our freshman year on Ground Davis. Steve was one of the first people I met at Carleton and remained a great friend throughout and after. He was determined to be a doctor and when he couldn’t gain acceptance to a U.S. med school he packed up and went to The University of Bologna in Italy. He spent a summer learning Italian and earned his medical degree there. I was in the Peace Corps in Iran during much of Steve’s time in Bologna and we met up for a week of travel in Greece during the summer of 1968. He was still “The Thwarg” in every way, whether enjoying ouzo in Athens or dancing at the Blueberry Hill outdoor bar on the island of Spetsas. Steve was always humble and kind and I miss him still.
