Bob Hart grew up in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and came to Carleton in September 1966. He landed on Fourth Goodhue but bettered himself during his four years on campus, ending up as our senior class vice president (Bob characteristically saw this as a joke, recalling years later that he was drafted by John Nason when there were no volunteers for the job).
He was known for playing the bass and any other string instrument he could lay his hands on, dancing the Haka, making questionable movies, and pursuing Sally Steusloff. He was successful in the last effort and they married in April 1971 while he was at Case Western Reserve Medical School.
Bob and Sally moved to Minnesota after med school, and raised two daughters in a rambling house in St. Paul. Being a father and husband always came first, but he was also a distinguished medical doctor both in family practice and, later, occupational medicine. He was offered jobs elsewhere, but he and Sally never budged from their loyalty to St. Paul. Bob also indulged his love of film by appearing as an extra in several feature films. “Grumpy Old Men,” starring Jack Lemmon, Ann-Margret, and Bob Hart, should not be missed.
Bob died in 2008 of a brain injury. He left behind his wife Sally, two accomplished daughters, Laurel (with husband Scott and children Katrine and Theo) in Santa Barbara, and Alexa (with husband Jeremy and children Kyra and Everett) in Chicago, and sister Betsy who is married to me, his Fourth Goodhue neighbor (thank you, Bob).
