Mike was born in Minneapolis and graduated from Patrick Henry High School. Mike dated classmate Esther Musson at Carleton, and the two were married during the summer after graduation.
After Carleton, Mike earned his master’s and PhD in Psychology from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. He joined the University of Tennessee Knoxville faculty in 1968 and served until his retirement in 2001.
While a full-time faculty member at the University of Tennessee, Mike earned a law degree, reflecting his strong intellect and legal interests. His knowledge of cognitive science combined with his legal expertise gave him a unique perspective which he shared with his students.
His students regarded Mike as a kind and engaging man. They felt themselves better for having known him.
