A remembrance by Margie Paulson Templeton
Mary was at Carleton for just two years. However, she left a big impression on me as a freshman. Mary, and her roommate, Gail Omvedt, lived next door to me and my roommate, Fran Watt. I was a “big city” girl from Minneapolis, while Mary was a small town girl from North Dakota. However, she seemed so sophisticated to me. Mary and Gail both smoked. I had never had a peer that smoked! Mary and Gail were both “intellectuals.” The four of us had many long conversations about life.
I lost touch with Mary after she left Carleton.

I met Mary when I was about 12 years old. It was summer up in the north woods of Minnesota at a Boy Scout camp. And wouldn't you know it, there was also a Girl Scout camp, just a 10 minute canoe paddle across the lake. Well, you can guess that there was quite a bit of canoe travel! Mary had a (twin?) brother who was also at the Scout camp. He introduced me to his sister, and the next time I saw her was at Carleton. We had one date, and a shared a bit of "remember when" stuff.
