Martha came to Carleton from Martin Van Buren High School in Flushing, New York.

She became a painter who was known for capturing the changing face of New York City. She enjoyed many longstanding friendships with poets, gallerists and painters including our classmates, Peter Schjeldahl and Donna Dennis.

She was a faculty member of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and she taught at other institutions, including Harvard University and the Yale Norfolk School of Art.

In Martha’s own modest words, “I just try to give back something of what I was lucky enough to come into… I tried always to help the women… to make sure that I gave them what they needed to do what they wanted to do.” Exhibitions of her work should appear at the David Kordansky Gallery in Los Angeles, the Colby College Museum of Art in Maine and the Aldrich Museum in Connecticut.
