Mark was one of the smartest, most humane people I've ever known. A highlight of my life at Carleton was working with Mark and John Bell (also RIP) on ourn slang dictionary, "Loosely Speaking" in the spring fo 1963. We saw each other occasionally over the years as we lived on the West Coast.
Mark had a deeply inquiring mind. Much affected by the student uprising at Columbia in the spring of 1968, he left the university at the end of our first year in graduate school. We caught up at our 25th Reunion and in his brief visit to London some twenty years ago.
