The reader is urged to read the family's obituary of John. It was prepared by Cathie, Michael and Sarah. You may click on it above. It is a loving tribute to a life well lived.
I met John early in our Freshman year. We became good friends. I didn't realize that John had a significant connection with Carleton. I believe his grandfather was a professor and his father a student and then a trustee. Of course, there followed his darling wife Cathie a loving classmate and his daughter Sarah a successful Carl.
A devoted Californian and outdoor person, John disliked the Minnesota winters. I still remember those chilly winter evenings freshman year when we kicked back in his Musser dorm room with our feet up on the heating unit. John was my roommate Sophomore year, and the comfort of feet up on the heating unit continued. Thankfully he met his wife Cathie at Carleton. She took his mind off the weather, and the rest was a long, loving history. In her own words, "I am very sad to have lost my best friend, sidekick and dear husband. John was a gem and I am grateful for the family we made together, our friendships, our many adventures and shared interests."
John called himself a "motor head" meaning that he had a great love of cars and especially hot rod cars. I remember his talk about a Studebaker coupe that he had in high school. It was a hot rod with a powerful modern engine from either Ford or Chevrolet. He loved that car. And even in his later years, his retired years from the faculty, he still called himself a "motor head."
John and Cathie were dear and loyal friends. I don't believe they ever missed a class reunion or class mini reunion. They were a darling and prominent chapter of my life.
