Through our Carleton years, Janie and I were friends. We shared adventures: rafting the Cannon [assuring ourselves this trip was both unprecedented and equally unlikely to be duplicated], fires in the Arb, trips to the Symphony, a summer at Tanglewood. Janie was funny, scholarly, gifted and passionately dedicated to the joy, imagination and creative spirit music brings to the world. She was concertmaster of the Carleton Orchestra, setting the standard for all. Looking back sixty years, those days seem the first chapter in a long story yet to be written. But, when we were young, that chapter felt like a whole novel, full of searching, drama, hope, love. Janie defined the meaning of friendship – she listened, offered counsel, curiosity, courage, balance, optimism. She was the best possible companion as we sorted out our youthful selves, sometimes tentatively, often, thanks to her, joyfully. Janie was a force for goodness on the Carleton campus, and her spirit invigorated the lives of all of us fortunate to know her.
