Jan and I were both chemistry majors. Immediately after graduation, we embarked on a 5-week backpacking tour of the western United States and Canada – transportation courtesy of 2-month unlimited ticket on the Greyhound Bus. Between camping and overnight bus rides, we hardly ever had to pay for a night’s lodging. This photo was taken at the end of our trip as we arrived at the Minneapolis bus terminal.
After our trip we kept in touch and watched our families grow – mostly through annual Christmas letters. We rarely got a chance to visit in person, and I was surprised when Jan retired at an early age. When we did visit in the summer of 2017, it became clear that Jan was having significant memory problems.
I miss keeping up with Jan, and can still hear her infectious trademark giggle.
