Edith was from St. Louis, Missouri where she graduated from Lutheran High School Central. She graduated magna cum laude from Carleton in three years. She continued her studies in a British literature graduate program at Washington University, St. Louis. In 1967 she married David Rehbein, a seminary student studying to become a minister.
Edith became very active in the Episcopal Church of St. Luke in Manhattan from the 1970’s. Professionally, she taught English at Middlesex College, New Jersey until 2013.
She loved living in Manhattan and took full advantage of its wonderful cultural opportunities, attending theater, operas, dance and concerts. Many winters she flew to London for its theater season simply for love of theater and London.
Described as a “formidable woman” for her appearance, intellect, and demeanor, one of her students wrote “she may look calm and quiet on the outside, but be prepared for a fun ride if you are an intelligent student.”
Other students described her as a “very sweet lady and very kind.”
