    Matthew Ginder-Vogel

Deborah Susan Ginder was born November 3rd, 1952, in Decatur, Georgia, to David Richards Ginder and Helen Brown Young Turner Ginder. The family followed Dr. Ginder’s career to Youngstown, Ohio, and finally Columbia, Missouri. Debbie was a skilled cello player and performed with the University of Missouri and Stephens College Orchestras while still in high school. She graduated from Carleton College, where she met her husband Peter Vogel. When Peter asked if she would be changing her last name to Vogel when they got married, she replied, in keeping with her strong and independent spirit, “Why? Will you be changing your last name to Ginder?” The couple settled in Little Falls in 1979 and moved into their prairie style home on the Swan River in 1988. Debbie and Peter’s two sons, Matthew and David Ginder-Vogel, attended local public schools. Debbie completed a Master’s degree in Biology at St. Cloud State University and worked in the public health and planning and zoning departments for Morrison County. She bravely suffered from a debilitating chronic pain condition and was largely confined to her home for the last ten years. She was kept company by the family menagerie of rescue dogs and cats and enjoyed restoring a prairie habitat on her property. Debbie is survived by her husband, sons, mother, Anne her sister, her niece Eleanor, daughter-in-law, Katie, and two grandsons Mark and Eric. Deb was a friend and roommate when we lived in Severence in 1972-3. She and I attended lots of meals and Wednesday night movies together. She had a great smile and laugh and though we were both biology majors, we never had a class together. She and Peter created an authentic Minnesota prairie on their property in Little Falls, MN, which I was able to visit several times during cross country trips. She never complained about her health struggles in spite of her pain. I miss her to this day and think of her often.
