Dave died in his sleep. His death was sudden and completely unexpected. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Thomson James ’77, and by his son, Andrew. Mason write that Dave is remembered fondly by his former teachers at Carleton.

My husband, David N. James ’74, died unexpectedly on May 8, 1996. After graduating from Carleton, Dave received his Ph.D. in philosophy from Vanderbilt University. On the faculty of Old Dominion University, Norfolk, Va., David had been awarded a Fullbright to teach bioethics at Attila Jozsef University in Szeged, Hungary for the 1996-97 academic year. David’s books include What is Professional Ethics?, and Rethinking College Athletics. He was working on a book about Immanuel Kant’s theory of virtue at the time of his death.
