Born in Seattle, Washington, Dave graduated with Carleton classmates Ken Bowen, Sally Johnson, Doug Wade and Scott Williams from Lyons Township High School in La Grange, Illinois. He developed his skills with words and phrases early. He was co-editor of his high school newspaper which was regarded as one of the finest student newspapers in the country. He wrote news and commentary for the Carletonian and scholarly and humorous vignettes for the Algol.
After Carleton, Dave attended Columbia University where he obtained a masters in journalism. He then worked as a newspaper reporter in turn for the Minneapolis Star and Houston Chronical before receiving a law degree from the University of Texas in 1971.
Thereafter, during his 17 year tenure with Time magazine, he covered legal affairs, economics, the white house and politics, as well as serving two years as foreign correspondent in Cairo, Egypt.
Dave then began government service. He served as Press Secretary for Vice President Quale, then several more years for Texas Senator Hutchison. He expanded his mark on the Texas political scene, working also for Senator Cornyn, Senator Cruz and others.
Dave was a well respected reporter; wise, honest and humorous. His enthusiasm was infectious. He was a mentor to many associates throughout his working life and retirement.
He was a devoted family man and a lovely gentleman who sought to find humor in almost every situation. Even if there was a disagreement or concern, he was always caring, courteous and respectful.
