David Bates ’68

Dr. David Bates, son of Dr. and Mrs. John C. Bates of Fremont died unexpectedly Friday, May 10, 1974.  He was born May 26, 1946 in Toledo and graduated from eight grade at St. Ann School in Fremont.  He graduated with honors from Campion Jesuit High School in Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin.  He received his bachelor of arts degree from Carleton College, Northfield, Minnesota and continued his education at Washington University, St. Louis, toward a doctor of philosophy degree in biochemistry.  He was completing post doctorate work with research on organic crystals at Yale University when he died.  He is survived by his wife, parent, one sister, and two brothers.

David was the Photo editor of  the 1965 Algol and I was one of his staff photographers.  I had not worked in this kind of environment with directed shoots and tight schedules, but David Was patient and trained me well. There is this picture of David, me, and Bird Loomis (the overall editor) on Page 34 of said Algol attempting to determine exactly who is in the picture.  And, of course, it’s a negative, which makes it even more difficult. David was efficient, organized, and humorous.  It was rewarding to work so closely with him.
