Cindy was my friend since 1st grade (1961) in Evanston, IL. She spent part of her college career at Carleton, going on to become a palliative medicine doctor who practiced first on the east coast, then near Seattle. Cindy was brilliant, passionate about patients rights, and possessed of a deep heart carved in part from childhood sorrow. Her career was tragically cut short by dementia, and in true Cindy form she and her husband John Todd weighed her options carefully and she opted to end her life on her terms under Washington state law. Cindy was active with EndofLifeWashington, and opted to end her life by the VSED protocol in the summer of 2022— but not before she made this video explaining her choice:
Her decision is one many of us will likely face as we age.
