Deceased: August 23, 2004

Dr. Carolyn Chapman graduated from Carleton with a degree in chemistry.  In 1969 she earned her MS in oncology from the University of Wisconsin and in 1991 completed her PhD in molecular genetics at SUNY Stony Brook.  She was employed by Madison McArdle Laboratory for Cancer Research.  Then for 32 years she was a professor of biology at Suffolk County Community College in Wisconsin.

Carolyn was an active volunteer with the Open Space Council, Planned Parenthood, the Guide Dog Foundation and the American Cancer Society.  She died in August 2004 and was survived by two daughters and five grandchildren.

Carolyn and I met one time after graduation when we were both bicycling across Iowa in that great week-long event called RAGBRAI or the Register’s Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. We laughed at the coincidence at meeting in a high school locker room after a cold shower, cleaning up after a day’s 75 mile-plus ride.
