Brett Alan Jason DeHaven, 62, passed away at his home on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2012 in Colorado Springs, Colo. Brett was born in Huron, on Sept. 2, 1950 to Albert Daniel DeHaven and Pearl Peggy Christensen DeHaven.

After graduating from Sioux Falls Washington High School in 1969, Brett went on to receive his undergraduate degree from Carleton College and his law degree from Yale University.

On Oct. 2, 1976 Brett married Debra Wendt in Brandon, and to this union they had three children. Years later Brett married Pamela Kattke of Ramona.

Brett was a charismatic guy known for his ability to talk with anyone. He spent many nights beating out every jeopardy contestant from his own living room and averaged over a hundred books read each year. Brett graduated top of his class from Yale, though lived most of his life in simple obscurity, his books and writings keeping him company. He was at his best in quiet conversations, at the card table or behind a book. Brett was a joyous soul whose laughter, tall tales and loving letters will be sorely missed by those who knew him well.

Brett is survived by his children, Dakota and Chance of Minneapolis and Briar Rose of Asheville, N.C.; his three brothers, Steven of Phoenix, Ariz., Mark of Spokane, Wash. and Kevin of Sioux Falls; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.
